It used to be one of our favorite hidden gems to suggest to students. We’re happy for them though. Really.Their supplement has a common “Why X School” component, but it’s formatted peculiarly. The second half of the supplement is a bit difficult to decipher in terms of what to include, where. Don’t worryâ€"we break it all down for you. Read on to understand what you need to complete a truly great Carleton College supplement.When did you first learn of Carleton? (no more than 150 words)Because you only have 150 words to tackle this, you can think of questions 1 and 2 as a combined “Why Carleton?” and this is your “culture” section. This is your opportunity to talk about why you are interested in Carleton, which is different than why you are applying.Our main suggestion to our students that we’ve advised on this supplement has been to make this a gradual learning story about Carleton. That is, if you don’t have a notable or distinct memory of when you first learned about the school, it can be a sequential discovery that tracks your learning about the school’s existence, how your research evolved, what aspects of the school intrigued and excited you. You can discuss its location, the size, some unique tidbits about the campus and Carleton’s community. Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf Review

Mrs. Dalloway is a complex and compelling modernist novel by  Virginia Woolf. It is a wonderful study of its principal characters. The novel enters into the consciousness of the people it takes as it subjects, creating a powerful, psychologically authentic effect. Although quite rightly numbered amongst the most famed modernist writers — such as Proust,  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Joyce, and  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Lawrence — Woolf is often considered to be a much gentler artist, lacking the darkness of the male contingent of the movement. With Mrs. Dalloway, though, Woolf created a visceral and unyielding vision of madness and a haunting descent into its depths. Overview Mrs. Dalloway follows a set of characters as they go about their lives on a normal day. The eponymous character, Clarissa Dalloway, does simple things: she buys some flowers, walks in a park, is visited by an old friend and throws a party. She speaks to a man who was once in love with her, and who still believes that she settled by marrying her politician husband. She talks to a female friend with whom she was once in love. Then, in the final pages of the book, she hears about a poor lost soul who threw himself from a doctors window onto a line of railings. Septimus This man is the second character central in Mrs. Dalloway. His name is Septimus Smith. Shell-shocked after his experiences in  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹World War I, he is a so-called madman who hears voices. He was once in love with a fellow soldier named Evans--a ghost who haunts him throughout the novel. His infirmity is rooted in his fear and his repression of this forbidden love. Finally, tired of a world that he believes is false and unreal, he commits suicide. The two characters whose experiences form the core of the novel — Clarissa and Septimus — share a number of similarities. In fact, Woolf saw Clarissa and Septimus as more like two different aspects of the same person, and the linkage between the two is emphasized by a series of stylistic repetitions and mirrorings. Unbeknownst to Clarissa and Septimus, their paths cross a number of times throughout the day — just as some of the situations in their lives followed similar paths.Clarissa and Septimus were in love with a person of their own sex, and both repressed their loves because of their social situations. Even as their lives mirror, parallel, and cross — Clarissa and Septimus take different paths in the final moments of the novel. Both are existentially insecure in the worlds they inhabit — one chooses life, while the other commits suicide. A Note on Style of Mrs. Dalloway Woolfs style — she is one of the most foremost proponents of what has become known as stream of consciousness — allows readers into the minds and hearts of her characters. She also incorporates a level of psychological realism that Victorian novels were never able to achieve. The every day is seen in a new light: internal processes are opened up in her prose, memories compete for attention, thoughts arise unprompted, and the deeply significant and the utterly trivial are treated with equal importance. Woolfs prose is also enormously poetic. She has a very special ability to make the ordinary ebb and flow of the mind sing.Mrs. Dalloway is linguistically inventive, but the novel also has an enormous amount to say about its characters. Woolf handles their situations with dignity and respect. As she studies Septimus and his deterioration into madness, we see a portrait that draws considerably from Woolfs own experiences. Woolfs stream of consciousness-style leads us to expe rience the madness. We hear the competing voices of sanity and insanity. Woolfs vision of madness does not dismiss Septimus as a person with a biological defect. She treats the consciousness of the madman as something apart, valuable in itself, and something from which the wonderful tapestry of her novel could be woven.

In The Crucible the characters all show different kind of growth throughout the story. The story is based of a town called Salem and when the Devil hit Salem all the people started to turn on each other. What started of as a little joke between girls turned into a whole game for them to play. The girls accused anyone they saw or anyone that did them wrong and each and every time those same people were hanged. Although, this play is mostly about the witchcraft the people also changed as time went by and they started to understand what was happening and why it was wrong. Contrasting from both of the first characters Reverend Hale was more of a guy who wanted to do right. In act four Hale finally starts to realize all what hes been doing wrong, and so was watching those innocent people getting blamed for something that wasn’t even real. Education In The 1800'S Education had an emphasis on many different aspects during the time prior to the Civil War. There was a certain irony that set the mode of this time making things that were said irrelevant to the actions that were taken. The paradoxes of education in Pre civil war America, are evidenced in subject matter, gender, class and race, as well as purpose. American education developed from European intellectual traditions and institutions transplanted to the new world and modified by contact among different colonial groups and between new settlers and indigenous peoples. The English majority had the most influence on education. In New England, also including the 13 colonies, the English language, laws, and customs had become the complete basis in colonial educational practice. (Cremin313). Education for Americans had been a problem ever since its beginning. Many people agreed with James Madison that ?All people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.? Many people felt that school was good and necessary, but were concerned about the cost. (Wright, Fowler 187). English Protestantism became the leading aspect for colonial education aspirations. Piety combined with devotion to vocation became the aim of education for the individual, and social perfectionism combined with an aggressive evangelism became the aim of education for the community. (Cremin 313-314). The necessity of being able to read the bible was one of the great motivations for schooling among protestant people. The key to salvation, Protestants believed, was to be found in the individuals reading of the scriptures, and in order to do this, everyone had to have enough knowledge to read the bible. (Wright 133-134) Family, above all, was the most important institution in both socialization and education. Families of the new world had a great organization in relationships in education and scriptural readings. Fathers were responsible for educating their sons or daughters and even apprentices or indentured servants living in their homes. With the help of their wives and other relatives of the family, fathers were able to teach their children how to read, or perform other practices that would help them in their everyday lives. They also wanted to install a sense of duty, morality, example, and discipline. (Cremin 314). Well to do families hired tutors for their children and sometimes shared their services with neighbors. Less fortunate people living in the back woods regions might have to do without schooling or get what they could from itinerant school masters and circuit- riding persons. (Wright 135) During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the family was much more than a sense of background, love and support. The family participated in many functions. Families were factories, farms helping to grow food, schools teaching their relatives about education, religious centers reading the bible and going to church, hospital, jails and almshouses. Since family shared an enormous part in education, education was mainly associated with most economic and social activities. (Cremin 314) The first formal schools existed in the 1630's. By 1635 The Boston Latin schools was established. The Boston Latin School was considered the first town supported school with a continuous history. (Cremin 314). The Boston Latin School is one of the most famous to this day. Citizens of Boston hired a schoolmaster to teach Latin in the school. (Wright 140) The school intended to advance literacy so that all could possess ?Knowledge of the scriptures.?(Cremin 314). Although schools during the 19th century seemed to show a separation between religion and secularism, there were Pro-Christianity communities that taught an immense amount of religion. Church should have been just a place where families would gather together when they pleased. A place where people can pray on their own time, and feel a sense of separation between what went on in their everyday lives and what went on in their holy lives, but that is not the way it was. According to one view, in earlier days, children needed to be justified by Christianity and the children of light were waiting for the word of god to bring them to salvation, and that it was the duty of the colonists to teach them to read the bible and learn Christian ways. They had to make do with hanging out in public places nearer home, because it was easier to get to and less expensive. In public places, a young person can think of mischievous things to do when others arent aware, but it makes others suspicious of them when they are caught. As a matter of fact, if someone is labeled bad, they are likely to act bad in public to demonstrate their awareness of others labels on them. These roughnecks acted out their bad label by making lewd remarks to people on the stree t and creating problems around them in public. He led the war against terrorism and championed both the USA Patriot Act and Homeland Security Department domestically which allowed his government’s to take up absolute power over the aspects of the international war on terrorism which included establishment of military tribunals and removing fundamental rights long recognized under the American law. Again Bush was successful in acting unilaterally by expanding his authority as he saw fit to accomplish his aims and objective without any regard to any of the fundamental rights of human beings which all people have whether they are American or not (Altman, 24). He was successful in launching his war of terrorism shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Like a dictator, he ordered the Taliban to surrender Osama Bin Laden. In response, Taliban tried their level best to bring Bin Laden to be trialed under Islamic law. At this, Bush made the decision to invade Afghanistan. After successfully capturing Afghanistan, the U. S captured various prisoners who he believed were associated to Al-Queda. The trouble was that many of the so called accomplices to Al-Qaeda were teenagers. Bush next target was to attack Iraq. In early 2002, Bush declared that Iraqis were developing weapons of mass destruction. He also announced that Iraqi regime was responsible for developing anthrax, nerve gas and nuclear weapons for over a decade (Andrew, 52). Based on this assumption, the United Nations sent a group of inspectors to Iraq to investigate on it. After a systematic and comprehensive search, the UN announced that were no nuclear weapons in Iraq but this was not sufficient answer for Bush. He took the decision to invade Iraq in March, 2003. There was no approval of force found with the United Nations. By doing this, Bush broke all global war agreements. His main intention to wage war on Iraq was for oil. By attacking Iraq, he is getting $5million out of Iraq per week. On attacking Iran, Bush decided to withdraw from the World Court of Law and made a decision that the policies and guidelines of United Nations were completely irrelevant. This showed that Bush’s intentions were to invade Iraq at any cost in order to get control of the oil fields. Bush as a leader George Bush with the help of Clarence Thomas has taken the most far-reaching and drastic standpoint, encouraging the government’s right to confine even American citizens as adversary opponents without allegations. The former deputy assistant legal representative in Bush’s Office of Legal Counsel, John Yoo, stand for president’s right to order torment if he considers it essential for nationwide security. Glory Movie Essay

Glory is both an awe inspiring and heart wrenching movie about the first all black volunteer company to fight in the civil war. The movie starts off with Col. Robert Gould Shaw leading a company of soldiers in Antietam which suffers heavy losses. Soon he is promoted to Colonel and given command to the 54th Massachusetts volunteer infantry; the first all black regiment. The first volunteer to sign up is an educated black man named Thomas Searles who is also Shaws friend. Many more men join the regiment including an escaped slave named Trip, a free black man named Jupiter Sharts, as well as the gravedigger Rawlins. After realizing the regiment in never going to be more than anything but manual labor, Colonel Shaw confronts his superiors and demands to be transferred to somewhere where they will see some fighting or else he will report him to the War Department for suspicious business. Shaws request is granted and is transferred to South Carolina where they successfully fight off a group of confederates. This movie was a huge hit. Released in 1989, it won a total of 16 awards including 3 Oscars and god nominated for 12 more awards. The Director Edward is well-known for his heroic movies that include Glory (1989), and the breathtaking works of art that include Legends of the Fall (1994) as well as modern hits such as Love and other Drugs (2010) and Defiance (20080. Zwick has also been known for his thoughtfulness as a director, and for his record of working with television series and other films as a producer. The movie itself was destined for greatness with huge Hollywood names such as Denzel Washington who played Trip and Morgan Freeman who played John Rawlins also great supporting actors like Matthew Broderick who played Colonel Shaw and Andre Braugher to play Thomas Searles. The movie budget was 18,000,000 and grossed a total of 26,830,000. In my own rating system 5 being the best and 1 being the lowest the movie got a 4. The movie deserved every award it got. There were amazing battle scenes as well as some very emotional scenes as well. Denzel Washington was an amazing actor, the scene where he was getting whipped for deserting (which we later find out was to find shoes) while the colonel was watching was one of the most heart wrenching scenes in the movie. As well as great acting the story never skips a beat. There’s never a dull moment. The movie had a clear plot and you could easily understand why something was happening. The movie gave a realistic view of how hard things were for African Americans were and their hunger to fight for what they believe is right. The historical accuracy of Glory is pretty questionable. It does a good job addressing the hardships and discrimination the 54th did go through. However like all Hollywood history movies it does have its rights and wrongs. Most of the volunteers in the movie were depicted as fugitive slaves when in reality they were free men in Massachusetts. Of the major characters in the movie’s version of the regiment, only Robert Gould Shaw was a real person. The rest are made up characters. The name of Shaw’s executive officer (Cabot Forbes) is a combination of the first name from one of the real Shaw’s friends and the last name of another. Colonel Shaw was a married man yet in the movie it wasn’t shown. Though it may not have been a big point in history it was a big part of Colonel Shaw’s personal life. At the end of the movie it states that â€Å"over half† of the regiment was lost during the assault on Fort Wagner. However, official records state that the 54th sustained 272 casualties, which is closer to 40%. Of these casualties, only 116 were fatalities, just under one fifth of the men to storm the fort, however if you include the 156 that were captured it would bring your total to over half. Most aspects of the movie however are true. When the black soldiers refused pay due to discrimination Colonel Shaw did refuse his pay as well. Against all expectations the 54th rose above that and proved them wrong. They proved their valor and honor throughout several battles during the war. Application for Graduate Program in Mechanical Enginnering...

I am Udit, a research fellow in Shock Tunnel Laboratory, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. I obtained Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 2012. I find myself fascinated by the fields of Gas Dynamics and Computational Fluid Dynamics. I am particularly interested in the areas of derivative fuels, combustion analysis and design of combustion chamber. It is in this context that I am applying for graduate studies towards MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford University. I also learnt that a great deal of persistence is required in obtaining substantial results in research. I am keen on complementing my undergraduate research experience by gaining a more in-depth understanding of these aspects of _________ in my future studies. With an aspiration to explore more in various aspects of Mechanical Engineering, I took elective courses in Computational Fluid Dynamics, Combustion Engineering, I. C. Engines, Finite Element Methods and Design of Fluid Machinery. In later, I opted for a course project on design of turbine blade profiles to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. I investigated flow angles for various flows like free forced vortex, power blading to design the 3D blade profiles in SolidWorks. My interest and work in heat transfer continued into my final year B.Tech project. I worked on development of design charts of cryostats for my undergraduate thesis. I performed a finite volume analysis of liquid Nitrogen and liquid Helium cryostats using ANSYS to analyze heat loss through various insulations and thermal stresses experienced by cryostat body. I developed data charts to design cryostats of given capacity and boil-off rate for
